Rafting on River Tara and Seafood in Kotor

Rafting fun on Montenegro’s wild river Tara

The size of Montenegro might be small but it is full of majestic mountains and breathtaking beaches. Rafting is a synonym for the turquoise river Tara in the small former Yugoslav republic. The Durmitor mountain range includes a fascinating national park, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980. It impresses with its glaciers and underground rivers, with dizzying gorges, glistening glacial lakes and almost 50 limestone peaks. The highest peak is the Bobotov Kuk with 2,523 meters.

From December to March, Durmitor is a large ski resort, while in summer it is ideal for hiking, rafting and other outdoor activities. The Durmitor National Park is known for its fantastic rafting tours. The rafting boat offers a breathtaking view of the impressive 1,300-meter-high walls of the Tara Canyon. The Black Lake near Žabljak is as impressive as the forests of the Biogradska Gora National Park near Kolašin.

Who would not fall in love with the dreamy old town of Kotor?

Continue from Durmitor through the beautiful country side. The varied landscape is best experienced with a rental car, bus driving is an alternative. After a while, the last patches of snow, green hills and farmhouses become less and stone houses with colorful terracotta tiles and dark blue water come into view. Then the Adriatic coast of Kotor is reached. It is worth spending a few days in the picturesque old town. Those who climb the approximately 1,300 steps to the fortress will be rewarded with a fantastic view and will also get acquainted with the colorful mixed cat population of the town. Kotor also has a lot to offer in culinary terms. Grilled octopus, risotto with seafood and other Mediterranean delicacies pamper visitors. Also worth seeing: explore the charming villages along the Bay of Kotor, Perast, Prčanj and the outskirts of Kotor, in the Dobrota district. While the old town of Kotor looks inward from its walls, Dobrota looks out to the sea.

Our tip: In April and May, rafting with the meltwater of the mountains can be dangerous, when the Tara river rushes through its narrow river bed at great speed. Therefore, it is recommended to book the rafting tour in the right season. Good starting point for rafting is the city Žabljak.
